Start with what you want to study

Students who pick a country first often end up on a course that does not suit them. Work in the other order: subject, then destination, then university. This page covers the study levels available and who each one is for.

Study levels

Six routes, depending on where you are now

01

Bachelor's programs
Undergraduate degrees taught in English. Entry depends on your results, your subject combination and the country's recognition of your qualification.

Who it’s for · HSC and A-Level graduates
Typical length · 3–4 years

02

Master's programs
Taught and research master's degrees. One-year options in the UK and parts of Europe make this the fastest route to an overseas qualification.

Who it’s for · Bachelor’s degree holders
Typical length · 1–2 years

03

Diploma & PGD
Vocational and postgraduate diplomas with a practical focus, often creditable towards a full degree afterwards.

Who it’s for · School leavers or graduates
Typical length · 6 months–2 years

04

Foundation programs
A bridging year that lifts your academic and English readiness to the level a degree requires. Usually guarantees progression if you pass.

Who it’s for · Students short of direct entry
Typical length · 6–12 months

05

ESL / EAP
English language and academic English courses, taken before or alongside a degree. Some universities accept these instead of a test score.

Who it’s for · Students short on English scores
Typical length · 8–40 weeks

06

PhD & research
Research degrees, sometimes funded through assistantships or scholarships. Requires a supervisor and a research proposal, not just an application.

Who it’s for · Master’s degree holders
Typical length · 3–4 years

How to decide

Three questions, in this order

Answer them out of order and you will end up rewriting your shortlist twice.

What do I want to study?

Start from the subjects you performed well in and the work you want to be doing in five years. If those two point in different directions, that is the first conversation to have.

Where is it taught well?

Some fields are strongly associated with particular countries — engineering in Germany and Sweden, nursing in Australia, one-year business master’s in the UK. Reputation at department level matters more than the university’s overall ranking.

Which university will accept me?

Now the shortlist gets practical: entry requirements against your actual grades, total cost against your actual budget, and intake dates against when you can realistically be ready.
